Let’s be honest, most of us adopted minimalism for two reasons: first, it was trending, and second, it made small spaces feel big. But now that the world has been shaped such that people are spending more time inside their homes, it has become difficult to keep the clean, minimal aesthetic alive and being comfortable at home.
The covid-19 pandemic has reminded people that a home needs to be comfortable more than aesthetically pleasing. It is why there has been a sudden and drastic shift from minimalism to maximalism. Maximalist décor looks pleasing to the eye while hiding the dirty dishes in between the décor pieces. But how can you transition from one extreme décor trend to its opposite? Let’s see how:
Add Some (Many) Colors
You can start small by incorporating color into your belongings before becoming a full-fledged maximalist. Begin by painting the walls a bold color or pasting them with a bold wallpaper. Don’t be afraid to try big patterns for wallpapers.
Contrary to popular assumptions, big patterns don’t make your walls look small. You can keep the wallpaper limited to a statement wall and paint a bold contrasting color on other walls of the room. To pull off a maximalist interior in a budget, you can change the couch covers with colored or patterned ones or through painting or dying cushions and curtains too!
Fill Up the Walls
Creating an art wall is one of the easiest ways to make your space look filled. Since the art of maximalism lies in mixing and matching, you can fill the wall with all kinds of art in different frames and without frames. Alternatively, you can also put up shelves on the wall and fill them with various items.
Mix Old and New
Turning your home trendy shouldn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Maximalist décor allows you to mix old and new things, which is why we love it so much! You can thrift the décor pieces, wall art, and even furniture. You can also happily take hand-me-downs from your family to make your space look eclectic. Get all your mom’s old décor from her garage and bring it home.
Antique décor mixes well with modern, minimal pieces too. So you can mix and match what you have available. If you want antique rugs in Boca Raton or to get old rugs cleaned, get it through a trusted place, so the quality of rugs is maintained. You want to mix old and new, not worn-out and new.
Get Your Favorite Plants
Plants are the safest way to make your space look full while keeping it look clean and fresh. The color green from the plants also goes well with various colors such as mustard yellow, pastel pink, white, and black. To make the green stand out, you can spread the plants across the room on shelves, side tables, floor or hang them from the ceiling. You can paint a statement wall with dark green to make it look more intentional too.
Get planters in various geometric shapes and colors to add more texture to the room. If you cannot keep plants alive, high-quality faux plants look equally great.
More is More
It can be difficult to transition from minimalist to maximalist interior. However, taking it one step at a time may help. You can try various techniques with time intervals and decide if you can stop or still want more. There’s no such thing as too much when it comes to maximalism. But there’s a fine line between put together and chaos.
For easy transition, begin with displaying what you already own and adding some colors on the walls or in accessories. While all colors are welcome in maximalist décor, you can pick your favorites and introduce them in more than one texture to make them stand out. Keep adding more and more layers to the main colors while adding other colors in accents until you are happy with how it looks.
Last but not the least, look for a few statement pieces of each room. Leopard print, color block, and dark finish wood are common among statement pieces for maximalist décor. However, you don’t have to follow the rules if they don’t convey your style. Maximalism is about more – and more can be whatever you want it to be. You can focus on making your space more comfortable for yourself or a place that brings you more joy, or more of both!
